During NIFT counselling and seat allotment rounds, you are required to select your course and campus preferences. The counselling is held in multiple rounds and you can either freeze, float or slide the acquired options.
During the NIFT counselling and seat allotment rounds, the final admission to NIFT campuses and programs is decided. It is done based on merit, preferences, and seat availability. The ones who are eligible must first register themselves online through the official portal.
The NIFT counselling process starts right after the result is declared and the common merit rank is released.
NIFT 2026 Online Registration for Counselling
The ones who have successfully qualified the NIFT exam 2026 will become eligible to apply for NIFT counselling 2026. The steps to be followed are as follows:
- Step 1: You must register yourselves online through the official portal.
- Step 2: Fill in your personal and academic details.
- Step 3: Select your campus and course preference in order of priority.
- Step 4: Upload all the required documents in scanned format.
- Step 5: Pay the counseling fee of INR 9300 to confirm your seat.
- Step 6: Fill in your choices and appear for document verification.

After you have registered, NIFT conducts the seat allotment in multiple rounds. The seat allotment is based on the following criteria:
- Choices selected by you
- Category
- Common merit rank secured by you
- Availability of seat in the particular campus
Only if your NIFT cutoff 2026 matches with the campus requirement will your seat allotment be accepted.
NIFT 2026 Multiple Seat Allotment Rounds
The NIFT seat allotment is held in three rounds followed by one spot round. The seats are allocated based on category, merit, and the preferences chosen by you. Only after this are you allowed to either freeze, float, or slide their options. The spot round is held for the remaining seats.
Freeze / Float Options in NIFT 2026
The NIT seat allotment offers three main options: freeze, float, or slide. This is done to manage the seat acceptance after results and allows you to secure your current seat or seek upgrades.
- Freeze means locking the seat, and there shall be no upgrade.
- Float means keep running for higher preferences.
- Slide means upgrading to a higher preference program within the campus.

After the NIFT seat allotment round has been completed, you can view your seats from the official website and pay the seat acceptance fee and select your willingness. This should be done within the given timeline.
After this, you must download your provisional seat allotment letter and report to the allotted campus for verification. The verification is typically done in July-August. In addition, if you have accepted the seat but still wish to cancel it, you can withdraw it online. However, you will lose all your paid fees, except for the security deposit.
